Water-based or silicone lube? How to choose

Table of content

Short answer: choose water-based if you want something that washes off easily and feels natural. Choose silicone if you want it to stay slippery for longer, for example during anal sex or in the shower. Both are safe with latex condoms. Read below to find out why, and what to look out for.

    Water-based lubricant: the all-rounder

Water-based lubricant feels most like your own natural moisture, washes off easily and leaves no stains. You can use it with anything: latex condoms and toys made from any material. That makes it the safest choice if you are unsure.

The downside: water evaporates. During longer sessions, you may need to reapply it occasionally. A few drops of water or saliva are often enough to revive the lubricant.

Do you often experience irritation? Then choose a lubricant that is as natural as possible, such as this natural lubricant from Aia. It is a pleasant, moisturising choice. Do you also use condoms? Then the natural latex condom combo deal is a convenient option.

For extremely sensitive skin, we recommend aloe vera lubricant from The Natural Love Company. It is made from 99.2% organic ingredients and carries The Vegan Society's approval.

    Silicone-based lubricant: long-lasting, slippery and water-resistant

Silicone lubricant does not soak in or evaporate. As a result, it stays slippery for much longer than water-based lubricant and you need less of it. This makes it popular for anal sex: the anus does not produce any moisture on its own, so you want a lubricant that does not dry out halfway through. Because it does not dissolve in water, you can also use it in the shower or bath. Please note: the floor or bath may become slippery.

Silicone lubricant is also safe with latex condoms. Whether you can use it with a silicone toy depends on the quality of that toy. Cheaper silicone can be damaged by silicone lubricant, making it sticky or rough. That is why we only stock toys that do not have this problem: all LieLei toys can be used with silicone lubricant without any worries. Do you have a toy from another brand? Then check the manufacturer's advice or choose water-based lubricant to be safe.

It is slightly harder to wash off than water-based lubricant. Use water and a mild soap that does not affect the pH balance of your fun area.

    What about oil?

Coconut oil, baby oil or a bottle of massage oil are often already at home, so it is tempting. However, we advise against using oil as a lubricant. Oil weakens latex condoms, making them more likely to break. In addition, oil is difficult to wash off.

The exception is our natural massage oil from Aia. Despite its name, it is made on a water base. You can therefore use it safely as a lubricant, even with condoms and toys. Convenient if a massage turns into something more...

FAQ: frequently asked questions about lubricant

What is the difference between water-based and silicone-based lubricant?
Water-based lubricant feels natural, washes off easily and is suitable for all toys, but evaporates more quickly. Silicone stays slippery for much longer and also works in water.

Can I use silicone lubricant with a silicone toy?
Yes, with all LieLei toys, because we only stock toys that are safe to use with it. Silicone lubricant can damage the surface of toys from other brands. Check the manufacturer's advice or choose water-based lubricant.

Which lubricant is safe with condoms?
Both water-based and silicone-based lubricants are safe with latex condoms. Do not use oil, coconut oil or massage oil, as they weaken latex.

Can I use coconut oil or massage oil as a lubricant?
It is better not to. Oil weakens latex condoms and is difficult to wash off. Aia's natural massage oil is an exception: it is made on a water base and is safe to use as a lubricant and with condoms.

Which lubricant is best for anal sex?
Silicone lubricant is popular because it stays slippery for a long time. Water-based lubricant can also be used, but you will need to reapply it more often.

Which lubricant is suitable for sensitive skin?
Always choose a lubricant without fragrance. And choose a lubricant that is as natural as possible, with as little or no glycerine. Too much glycerine can irritate sensitive mucous membranes.
